AS SEEN IN NEWSDAY
An Oyster Bay High School senior has created a self-guided tour pamphlet promoting the area’s historical ties to President Theodore Roosevelt. The “Teddy’s Tour” pamphlet, crafted by Brittany Browner, includes 13 historical highlights, including Sagamore Hill, known as the “Summer White House;” the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center; and Youngs Memorial Cemetery, where the 26th president and his wife, Edith, are buried. Browner’s effort was the community service component of her Gold Award, the highest honor that can be earned by a Girl Scout. She is a member of Girl Scout Troop 138. The pamphlet also encourages people to post their photos on social media using the hashtags #teddystourob and #visitoysterbay. “I always knew I wanted to target something in my town,” said Browner, 17. “Oyster Bay is a very small town, and I figured this would help attract people from the outside and help businesses make more money.” She said she handed out 1,500 pamphlets last fall at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park during the hamlet’s 34th annual Oyster Festival. She plans to ask local stores and restaurants to display the pamphlets and hopes to make a printable version available through the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce’s website. Browner is a member of her school’s badminton team, National Honor Society and Science Honor Society.— Michael R. Ebert, Newsday My name is Brittany Browner and I am working on my Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest ranked award for Girl Scouts (the equivalent of the Eagle Scout award), requiring an individual project that will have a continuing effect. I wanted to do my project to better my Oyster Bay community that I am so passionate about. My project targets tourism and increased business exposure using a historical locations tour. Come take “Teddy’s Tour” to see what my project is all about!
Oyster Bay Girl Scout earns Gold Award!
Oyster Bay high school senior and Senior Ambassador Girl Scout Brittany Browner was recognized at the Town of Oyster Bay meeting on May 8. Supervisor Saladino presented Ms. Browner with a citation recognizing her efforts in earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award. For her project, Brittany created a self-guided walking tour of historic sites in Oyster Bay, partnering with the Oyster Bay- East Norwich Chamber of Commerce. The goal of this tour is to increase foot traffic to town, thus increasing commerce in our community. The chamber will go on to continue promoting this tour. Alex Gallego, in his role as branch director at the Gallego Financial Group of Raymond James, President of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce and financial officer at AMVETS attended the event to present Ms. Browner with a certificate recognizing her accomplishments. Additionally, Alex and the Gallego Financial Group awarded Brittany a scholarship to help her pursue her goals as she attends Penn State in the fall. We look forward to seeing everything she will achieve in the future! |
